A player in sustainable development

The Compagnie de Chauffage Intercommunale de l'Agglomération Grenobloise (CCIAG) is a local energy operator for the production and distribution of heat and related services in the metropolitan area. For nearly 60 years, the company has been facilitating and supporting urban development and renewal for an attractive, socially responsible and sustainable metropolis. Thanks to its innovative approach, it offers an ever greener energy mix to supply its heating network, the 2nd largest in France, currently 65% renewable and recovery energy, with a target of 100% by 2033.

Since February 1st, the CCIAG has been connected to the infrastructures of GrenoblIX, IXP / NAP of Grenoble.

"The opportunity to integrate GrenoblIX presented itself to us as we began to explore the Grenoble basin in search of operators that would allow us to increase our current external bandwidth to meet the company's growing needs as part of its digital transformation. At the same time, we were put in contact with the department in charge of Metronet (the dark fibre network of the Metro), which allows us to interconnect all our sites and connect to the IXPs in Grenoble at a lower cost.
The rental of a local loop, as well as the Internet access attached to it, has therefore been made obsolete by the use of Métronet for our MAN (Metropolitan Aera Network) on the one hand, and for the "last mile" to the transit operators present in the IXP DCs on the other hand.
In addition, our presence in the IXP will allow us to interconnect directly with local actors, and other LyonIX members, allowing us first of all to save even more on our future transit purchases, but also to reduce our latency times towards them.
In the end, we will have a better understanding of all aspects of the company's connectivity to the outside world, by becoming a LIR operator, and will no longer be dependent on the risks associated with a single operator."

The first Web page was born in Villeurbanne

on Wednesday, 13 March 2019 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX

The first Web page was born in Villeurbanne

Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), laid the first foundations of the Web in March 1989. Three years later, he presented the first site that could be consulted outside CERN at a scientific meeting in Annecy (the ancestor of the Web Conference) attended by the computer engineer Wojciech Wojcik, then CERN correspondent for the CNRS.

It returns to the laboratory with this technology of easy sharing of the same information. With another engineer, Daniel Charnay, he created France's first web page dedicated to IN2P3 (Institut National de physique nucléaire et de physique des particules located in Villeurbanne): a photo of the building, some information and three hypertext links to other websites around the world. The site info.in2p3.fr thus became the first French site and the fifth largest in the world at the time.

THD radio: manufacturers are asking for more time

THD radio: manufacturers are asking for more time

Arcep has opened a window to allow local authorities to obtain THD radio frequencies and thus deploy this technology on their territories. The challenge is to be able to offer very high speed (minimum 30 Mb/s) to households with the lowest ADSL coverage and promised a late arrival of optical fibre. According to InfraNum, some 2.2 million households will be affected by 2022.

But here we are, only a handful of local authorities have obtained or requested dedicated frequencies. Indeed, the Federation reports a "deployment of the THD radio [...] under study or confirmed for nearly 40 departments" and notes that to date a "dozen departments" have not initiated any action.

InfraNum therefore sounds the alarm and asks Arcep to extend the opening of the THD radio counter by one year. The objective is to have more time to convince these communities to opt for a wireless solution. If other solutions exist, such as 4G setting up major national operators, the Federation warns that it will "not support, in addition, specific domestic or professional uses". And the prospect of a fixed 5G service is no more to be considered "waiting for its arrival to meet an immediate need for very high fixed broadband in rural areas is a decoy" warns Etienne Dugas, President of InfraNum....

OSM-FR: small fundraising for large project

OSM-FR: small fundraising for large project

Created in October 2011 to promote the collection, distribution and use of cartographic data under free licenses, the OpenStreetMap France association has just completed its second successful donation campaign. Indeed, it has just announced that it has collected €10,081 from 106 donors.

OSM France states on its blog that this call for donations was "aimed at upgrading and extending the association's technical resources. To indicate the expected improvements in community services, our technical team had quantified 3 levels (set at 4,000, 5,000 and 6,500 euros). You were 106 people to give to exceed all levels and reach a collection of 10,081 euros. [...]
A first server is being upgraded. Work will continue in the coming months. We have already improved the service of quality analyses performed by Osmose. Now we can reach a daily rhythm all over the world.
On the occasion of this call for (financial) donations, some interlocutors also proposed new material resources. Finally, and most importantly, new volunteers have emerged to strengthen the technical team".

This campaign, launched in mid-November, will therefore make it possible to rejuvenate and strengthen servers that are highly solicited and that "age quickly and threaten to give up on us".

Covage is on sale for one billion euros

on Thursday, 07 March 2019 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX

Covage is on sale for one billion euros

After Altice at the end of November, it is Cube Infrastructure's turn to put its shares up for sale according to several sources. Covage's 50% shareholder paid 66 million euros in 2012 to buy back its shares from Vinci. However, Morgan Stanley Bank was mandated to find a buyer on the basis of a valuation of €1 billion.

The group's EBITDA would now reach €35 million for a turnover of around €100 million. "These ratios are not relevant. We are talking about an activity in full explosion with a very low maturity. In reality, the main driver is rarity," points out a good connoisseur of the file.
Charged by several departments with deploying optical fibre, Covage has already connected 630,000 of the planned 2.2 million households. The company still hopes to win a few more contracts to reach 3 million catches, which would represent just under 10% of French households.
When all the cables are pulled, Covage will be one of the few players to have such a digital infrastructure in a significant portion of the country. Indeed, once this task is completed, operators will have to pay a fee to use their networks.

€1.8 billion to acquire half of the optical lines that SFR must deploy outside major cities. But this deal is criticized in the industry because many believe that the infrastructure has been oversold. Indeed, the line rental prices highlighted could not be applied.

On paper, there are many candidates for the acquisition of Covage: investment funds, other RIP players, in particular Altitude or major operators...

Designing DCs for tomorrow today

on Wednesday, 27 February 2019 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX

Designing DCs for tomorrow today

How can we succeed in building IT infrastructures in a sustainable and perennial way for the next 20 years? What are the important elements to consider during the design phase?

Although it may seem easy to build data centers, it is a rapidly evolving industry. Indeed, today's rooms are becoming denser, servers consume more and more energy and are heavier. Modularity concepts are shaking up the market every month, the ranges are evolving rapidly to better meet users' needs....

This is why adaptability and modularity must be part of the solutions to these problems from the design phases. For example, choose modular cooling and electrical solutions, increase power and load during maintenance, design large equipment by oversizing it.
It can also be very useful to implement new Agile working methods. It is therefore essential to be flexible and adapt to these changes that can affect the project in a sustainable way.
Modularity is also an essential point during the design phase, especially if you choose an atypical location to set up your data center. However, legal or regulatory aspects may run counter to this modularity. It is therefore necessary to address these problems as soon as possible, as they often have incompressible deadlines...

New reference system for fibre professions

on Tuesday, 26 February 2019 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX

New reference system for fibre professions

Published by Objectif Fibre and its partners, this mapping of the optical fibre business has required more than a year of collaborative work. Developed as part of the Employment and Skills Development Commitment (EDEC), this tool aims to facilitate description, training and recruitment in this sector.

Expected by employment, training, companies and local authorities, this reference framework is divided into 26 job descriptions defining the corresponding profiles. These sheets thus complete the description of the job titles, the activity, the prerequisites, the missions or the development prospects.

This publication confirms the dynamism of the players in the fast-growing optical fibre market and the collective intelligence at the service of the France Very High Speed Plan. The deployment of the HSBB is a major challenge since it represents 22,000 job creations by 2022 with an average of 3,800 new hires each year in various fields.

Development of French DCs

on Wednesday, 20 February 2019 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX

Development of French DCs

Interviewed by LeMagIT, Olivier Micheli notes that French data centers are finally attracting international cloud players and that they are expanding geographically in order to reduce latency.

Olivier Micheli, who is both CEO of Data4 Group and President of the France Datacenter Association, estimates that there are 200 large datacenters in France covering up to 10,000 m². The capital with the largest number of people because Paris is a European interconnection node.
There are between 3000 and 5000 private computer rooms of varying size and power across the country.
Beyond the desire of companies to control their equipment, the importance of ever lower latency is increasingly important in local economic activities and the development of smart cities.
According to Olivier Micheli, the market is moving towards data centres whose size is proportional to the size of the economic activity nearby.

After a slow period between 2012 and 2015, the French data center market has caught up. France is now in fourth place in Europe, tied with Ireland. There are several reasons for this: the opportunity for international companies to reach 67 million people from locally hosted IT resources, the geostrategic importance of Marseille and also the government's efforts to create favourable conditions for the development of these datacenters.
This finally allows France to align itself with the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands.

The customers of these data centers are 70% of public cloud players such as Amazon, AWS but also publishers such as Salesforce. User companies want a lot of support.

The first issue for datacenters is, according to Olivier Micheli, connectivity. Indeed, companies now want to benefit from an offshore computer room in order to redistribute this data to users and Internet actors.
The second challenge is that of intelligent buildings and to achieve 100% renewable energy by using, for example, Free Cooling.

Main driver of growth in the global ICT market

on Wednesday, 20 February 2019 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX

Main driver of growth in the global ICT market

According to International Data Corporation, the consumption of suppliers of servers, storage solutions and network equipment and software accounted for 44% of sales in 2018. These investments are expected to increase by an average of 6% per year and represent $426 billion over the next three years. Investments by cloud and digital service providers are expected to grow the most to reach $105 billion (+9% per year on average). Purchases by providers of hosting and colocation services amounted to $67 billion, representing an average annual growth rate of 7%.

However, there is a wide disparity between regions of the world. Indeed, if the share of these investments in the United States should increase to 47% in 2022 (compared to 44% today), Western Europe's share will not change and will remain at 12%.
