According to the IESF National Survey on the engineer situation realized in March and April, 2016, the feminization of this profession continues. The women represent 29 % of the qualified engineers in 2015 (aged 25-30), while they were hardly 5 % in 1973. "There is a strong growth even if the overall percentage remains low" - clarifies François Lureau, the IESF President. The feminization is also progressing in people's minds, the very large majority of engineers see a positive contribution in the management.

Nonetheless, a "slow feminization" remains very sectorized in the smallest share of the revenue areas. Therefore, "on average women engineers earn 9.000 € a year less than their male counterparts". Learn more on the 2016 IESF National Investigation on Engineers.

About the IESF

This company represents the Engineers and Scientists of France. Recognized to be of public utility since 1860, this organization federates 175 associations of ex students of engineering schools, scientific, technical and professional associations, a one million engineers community and 200 000 scientists, due to their diplomas and functions.

The observatory of the French Internet resilience publishes its 2015 report

[French article]

Participate in the RIPE NCC Survey 2016

https://www.ripe.net/survey2016

This will not only help the RIPE NCC build a strategy that will best benefit the Internet community in France and throughout our service region, but they will also have a chance to win one of five iPads if they complete the survey. The earlier you do it, the more chances you have to win a prize. We've done it in less than 10 minutes. There are plenty of interesting questions and you might even discover some services of RIPE you didn't knew about.

IXP: Critical interconnection point in 2019?

According to Cisco, the annual IP datacenter traffic will globally reach 10.4 Zb in 2019, including 8.6 Zb generated by the only Cloud services.

According to Global Cloud Index of Cisco, the datacenter traffic should globally triple between 2014 and 2019. It would pass from 3.4 Zb in 2014 to 10.4 Zb in 2019. And the traffic generated by the Cloud services should quadruple over the period, passing from 2.1 Zb to 8.6 Zb per year. So, the Cloud services would represent 83 % of the datacenter traffic in 2019.

Is It Really Worth Peering at IXPs?

on Friday, 09 October 2015 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX, Archives EuroGIX

Is It Really Worth Peering at IXPs?

Roberto di Lallo, Italian computer scientist at Roma Tre University, made a research on the importance of IXPs, Internet eXchange Points and their effects on the latency of networks. IXPs are infrastructures used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to exchange traffic between their Autonomous Systems (ASes). An IXP allows ISPs to interconnect their ASes directly, i.e. to establish peerings between them, rather than through third-party networks (upstreams). IXPs play a crucial role in the development of the Internet, encouraging ISPs to create a dense network of interconnections at low cost. Some of them have a throughput of many Tbit/sec and are some of the most important building blocks of today’s Internet.

Internet exchange points (IXPs) are infrastructures allowing the ISPs to exchange the traffic between their networks without passing by a third-party network. The historic and technical importance of the IXPs, in terms of network densification, performance and cost reduction, was recently questioned by certain number of major ISPs having decided to leave (de-peering) the IXPs under the pretext of better IP traffic management and improvement in the QoS.

A study conducted by Roberto di Lallo aims to prove that the benefits induced by the IXPs are real in terms of performance and network security. This consisted in using about 150 RIPE probes in Italy and comparing trafic performance passing through two main Italian IXPs, MIX and NaMex, or through third-party network besides IXPs, towards 50 sites considered to be critical (bank, insurance, administration), and the 100 most visited sites in Italy. It was made possible thanks to the collaboration of small local ISPs which left the control of their BGP announcements to Di Lallo's team.
